LOS ANGELES

The City of Angels, often referred to by its initials, L.A., is the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California. Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and one of the world's most populous megacities. With a population of roughly 3.9 million residents within the city limits as of 2023. LA is known for its Mediterranean climate, cultural diversity, being the home of the Hollywood film industry, and its sprawling metropolitan area. The majority of the city proper lies in a basin in southern California adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in the west and extending partly through the Santa Monica Mountains and north into the San Fernando Valley, with the city bordering the San Gabriel Valley to its east. It covers about 469 square miles (1,210 km2) and is the county seat of Los Angeles County, which is the most populous county in the United States with an estimated 9.86 million residents as of 2023.

what to see

Head to downtown LA to see the finish line festivities, or visit nearby attractions like the LA Memorial Coliseum, Staples Center, or Grand Central Market. In the heart of downtown, check out The Broad contemporary art museum and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

West of downtown in Hollywood and West Hollywood, you could walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame, see the TCL Chinese Theatre, shop on Melrose Avenue, or go on a tour of celebrity homes. Further west, the Getty Center museum has beautiful gardens, art exhibits, and panoramic views of the city.

Along the coast, the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach are always entertaining spots to soak in the lively atmosphere. You could also head south to Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach for a more relaxed beach vibe. With the marathon going right past these beach communities, they will be extra energized that weekend.

Marathon weekend is a great time to experience the diversity of Los Angeles, from the beaches to Downtown to the Hollywood Hills.

where to run

There is so much to see and explore in LA that we recommend just going outside and getting lost. Remember, the sidewalk is uneven here and not your friend. Use caution.

The best place to run during marathon weekend in Los Angeles that is not on the course of the marathon would be Griffith Park. It has many trails with stunning views of the city and Hollywood sign. You can park near the Observatory for the sights and get a little sweat in while you are at it.

“Hancock Park. The homes are beautiful, the streets are quiet and lined with palm trees and flowers, and the area is central to most of LA. You even get a nice view of the Hollywood sign. If you want hills, try Silverlake or Los Feliz – and for a trail try Griffith Park or Kenneth Hahn Park. If you're staying on the West Side, Santa Monica is a beautiful place for a run with ocean views.” - @deandresmith
